Tristram Hillier was impressed by the paintings of Giorgio de Chirico, which he encountered while living in Paris in the 1920s. The Italian’s plunging perspectives and unexpected juxtapositions evoked a mysterious world that led Hillier towards Surrealism. Hillier’s technique was to make rough drawings which he would then elaborate in his studio. Widely travelled, Landscape with Buildings has a clear azure sky and architecture with the white-washed church typical of the Mediterranean.
