Andrew Lambirth, John Armstrong, the Paintings, London, 2009 (illustrated, no. 462)
With Paul Nash, John Armstrong co-founded Unit One, whose manifesto declared the need for ‘a structural purpose’ in British art. He began to produce surrealist work but also made designs for theatre and film and was a highly skilled mural and classical painter. He was a keen observer of the human condition and his work comments on mankind’s frailty. This is the smallest version of The Vision of St Theresa series.
