John Nash had no formal art training; he had no interest in art history and kept himself distracted from art fashions and movements, adopting a slightly naïve style eventually turning to lithography. Although Nash’s main artistic preoccupation was with plants and landscape, he was often to comment visually on ‘the human comedy’. Window Plants combines both the plants and the humour and exemplifies well his simplified, near poster-like style, his skill as a lithographer and the whimsy that frequently appeared in his illustrative work.
