The land and seascapes of Cornwall provided endless subject matter for Terry Frost. Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson, the leading British abstract artists of their generation, had moved to St Ives at the outset of the Second World War, and in the post-war years a younger generation of artists gravitated around them, among them Terry Frost. This drawing is one of Terry Frost’s earliest steps towards abstraction, using simple lines and forms in blocks of colour.
