Richard Eurich is mainly known for his landscapes and coastal scenes, with the sea and sea shore being frequent motifs. Born in Bradford, he attended the Slade School in London from 1924-26. After his marriage in 1934 he moved to Dibden Purlieu, Hampshire, where the nearby Solent and Southampton docks became an important source of inspiration. A surreal element is created by the addition of a near-naked boy reclining in the lower right-hand corner of the painting, an ambiguous and unexplained part of the composition.
