Following several successful exhibitions at the end of the 1950s and beginning of the 1960s, John Tunnard experienced a crisis of confidence, and destroyed quite a number of his paintings. By the middle of the 1960s though, when Plan was painted, Tunnard had fully regained his confidence and was showing his mature style with ease.
