Henri Gaudier-Brzeska produced a huge number of line drawings of animals and figures. He was an artist who constantly experimented in both sculpture and drawing, always seeking to capture the energy and rhythm he saw in living forms. He enlisted with the French army at the beginning of the First World War, and his letters show that even in the trenches he continued to think about, and to make art, producing sketches and carvings. He received a decoration for bravery before being killed at the early age of 23 – an inventive and promising career cut short.
