Woking, The Lightbox, Football, Celebrating the Olympics, 1 July – 30 September 2012
Nevinson, one of the most famous war artists, was a British figure and landscape painter, etcher and lithographer. Any Winter Afternoon in England is one of the most well known paintings to have football as its subject matter during the first 40 years of the sport’s professional life. Nevinson, however, is derisive of football in his work and therefore conflicts with popular visual representations of football at the time, such as postcards and film. This is a print taken from the original painting by Nevinson which is a highlight in the collection at the Manchester Art Gallery.
