John Bratby worked in a social realist style, using vibrant colours painted or applied thickly onto his canvasses. On first seeing the work of Bratby and his contemporaries in 1954, David Sylvester saw that their art presented a remarkable variety of subjects. “Everything but the kitchen sink? The kitchen sink too.” The name the Kitchen Sink Painters was thus coined.
