Edward Burra attended preparatory school but was withdrawn due to anaemia and rheumatic fever. Never recovering from illness, he left school with a minimal education. Unable to stand for long periods of time, he once said, “If I could work lying down I’d do so.” Stage design brought Burra before a wide audience. He worked on four ballets and an opera.
