Craigie Aitchison’s subject matter is mostly traditional and often features religious themes. In 1955 he was awarded the British Council Italian Government Scholarship for painting and travelled to Italy, where the ‘Biblical’ landscapes had a profound influence on his work. Reminiscent of 15th-century miniatures, Aitchison’s religious works are not of an ecclesiastical discipline; they rather possess a classic, expressive and mysterious aura.
