This piece is an example of Michael Ayrton’s fascination, or obsession, with Greek mythology. Demeter was the goddess of agriculture (or the harvest), grain and bread – things that sustain mankind. Kore, also known as Persephone, was the daughter of Demeter and Zeus and is often depicted with her mother. Kore is known as the formidable, venerable majestic princess of the underworld and the personification of spring growth, returning as she did after Hades had abducted her.
