This drawing is from the period of Austin Osman Spare’s first flowering as an artist – having exhibited at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition in 1904 and going on to study at the Royal College of Art where he never completed the course. A visionary and a magician, Spare was never taken up by the mainstream art world. He died in relative obscurity.
