Music and poetry played an important role in the Richards family home in Dunvant, near Swansea; Ceri Richards was taught to play the piano from an early age. This pianist theme is one which Richards returned to throughout his career. Here the loose, sometimes frenzied brush strokes and dense, dark colours show the influences of Picasso and Matisse.
