Tristram Hillier was impressed by the paintings of Giorgio de Chirico, which he encountered while living in Paris in the 1920s. The Italian’s plunging perspectives and unexpected juxtapositions evoked a mysterious world that led Hillier towards Surrealism. Hillier’s technique was to make rough drawings which he would then elaborate in his studio. Hillier was widely travelled, and Landscape with Buildings has a clear azure sky and architecture with the white-washed church typical of the Mediterranean.
