David Carr was originally destined for a life of commerce with the family business Carr’s Biscuits, but he yearned to be an artist and studied at the Byam Shaw School and then at Cedric Morris’ East Anglian School of Painting and Drawings. In the 1950s he produced a remarkable series of works exploring the relationship between man and machinery, drawing on his first-hand knowledge of the industrial process. In this futuristic vision the lines between the man and the machine become blurred creating a monster where the individual’s identity is subsumed into the sinister, angular blades of the engine.
