‘Middling’ is a puncture painting which is quite typical for my practice. It’s the result of a meditative process which involves plotting text onto a fabric surface and then unravelling these holes. I love the way the text descends into illegibility, and how the thoughts I’m having during the process become involved in the way that I’m making.
It was inspired by the documentary botanist Anna Atkins (1799–1871), who used the cyanotype to document plants. I liked the process of projecting something that’s real or tangible onto a surface for documentary purposes but in a medium that’s really subjective.”
