Monseigneur St Thomas depicts the murder in Canterbury Cathedral of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury in 1170. The composition skillfully controls the viewer’s gaze. Looking into the centre of the work, the observer’s eye is drawn out to the paper’s edge.
