After his artistic training at the Slade School of Art in London, Matthew Smith spent time in France and for a brief period, attended Matisse’s studio. Smith returned to live and work in London, but frequently travelled to France in the inter-war years, particularly to Provence. The colour and rapid brushstrokes visible in the present work show the influence of Matisse and the Fauves.
