Edgar Ainsworth was drawn to journalism, where his particular blend of observation and graphic skill was employed to its best effect. His illustrative work appeared in all the important visual magazines. In 1945, Ainsworth sent Mervyn Peake to witness the liberation of the Belsen concentration camp, and soon after went there himself to make his own set of powerful illustrations which were published in The Picture Post. These were later purchased by the Imperial War Museum.
