Mary Fedden made a name for herself with her colourful and striking still life and seascape compositions. Fedden studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1932 to 1936. She then returned to Bristol where she painted and taught until the outbreak of World War Two. During the war she served in the Land Army and the Women’s Voluntary Service, and on settling in London she worked as a stage painter for the Arts Theatre in Great Newport Street and produced propaganda murals. In 1944 she was called up and sent abroad as a driver for the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes.
