Stanley Spencer became close friends with Lady Ottoline Morrell who had a keen interest in him and his art and regularly spent time at Garsington Manor. He married his second wife, painter Patricia Preece but they never consummated their marriage. They eventually separated but she refused to grant him a divorce and she kept the house for herself and her female lover Dorothy Hepworth. He was the elder brother of artist Gilbert Spencer.
