Portrait of the Artist was modelled on Eduardo Paolozzi’s bronze, The Artist as Hephaestus, 1987 which used to stand at High Holborn in London. Hephaestus was the Greek god of the forge. He was the only god to suffer physical deformity but was famed for his craftsmanship.
