Barbara Rae’s travels have greatly influenced her art. Rae has said, “I’m not interested in topographical detail. I need to be able to immerse myself in the culture of a place to create art.” Rather than mixing paints on a palette, Rae applies unmixed acrylic paints to the canvas itself and then pours fluid over them to blend them. Here, the fleeting effects of the earthy landscape are captured along with the heat of the day in this roadside scene taken in the Florentine region of Castelfiorentino in Italy.
