Drawing is such a simple medium that it is easy to overlook its power to express not only the character of the person drawn, but also the character of the artist and their feeling for the subject. An artist whose paintings are very stylised, like Wyndham Lewis, may reveal more of themselves in a self-portrait drawing, as he does perhaps in this study for the 1932 series ‘Thirty personalities and one self-portrait’.
