Kenneth Armitage’s subject matter is often an abstraction of form, but recognisably human, the features and limbs simplified and sometimes fused together with the torso. In 1952 Armitage was chosen alongside Reg Butler, Lynn Chadwick, Bernard Meadows and others to represent the British section of the Venice Biennale, at the time, one of the highest honours bestowed on an artist.
