State I is a mixed media piece which was made in reaction to research into two topics, firstly the apartheid movement, and secondly the current state of South Africa. He says “This work served as an exercise for me to try and begin to understand the apartheid regime, I was 6 years old when the regime was abolished, growing up in its shadow I never knew what to believe, being fed one story and told another. Since the African National Congress took control in 1994, corruption, nepotism and cronyism have resulted in tens of billions of Rands miss spent and unaccounted for. The poor leadership and incompetence has resulted in South Africa being downgraded to one level above junk status, one more downgrade could have disastrous consequences”.
