A contemporary Scottish figurative painter, Stephen Conroy studied at the Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 1987 to critical acclaim. Painted in sombre, muted colours, the shadowy figures, seen in profile against the dark and menacing machinery seem intimidating and threatening. The character with blank glasses appears frequently in Conroy’s work and the sense of unease and claustrophobia which the artist creates was central to his work of the 1980s. The narrative behind the picture is unclear, and the viewer is left to question the identity and purpose of the scene.
