Maxwell Armfield was inspired by his visit to New York, finding the clarity and sharpness of the light ‘as keen as a razor’. He captured the wintry landscape with a limited palette of colours, emphasising the scale and desolation of the ice plant factory against the broad sweep of the Hudson River.
