Iris Tree was a poet, actress and painter’s model, painted not only by Dora Carrington, but also by Vanessa Bell, Roger Fry, Duncan Grant and Augustus John. She was also sculpted by John Epstein and photographed by Man Ray. Dora Carrington was a member of the Bloomsbury Group. One of the ideological tenets of the group was to work towards changing people’s attitudes away from the constraints of strict religion, social rituals and sexual taboos to personal pleasure. Inter relations amongst the group stemmed from both homosexual and heterosexual liaisons including a lesbian relationship between Carrington and Lady Ottoline Morrell (pictured in the portrait by Henry Lamb). She committed suicide, shooting herself, in 1932.
