A Scottish painter, Bellany studied at the Edinburgh College of Art under Robin Phillipson with Alan Bold and Alexander Moffat. He was later awarded a travelling scholarship and traveled around Europe. Upon his return, he enrolled in the Royal College of Art in London. In 1973, Bellany was elected to The London Group.
