Sir Augustus Edwin John, O.M., R.A.

A painter, draughtsman, etcher and lithographer, John studied at the Slade School 1894–8 where he won a scholarship in 1896 and the Summer Composition Prize in 1898. Influenced by Rembrandt, El Greco and the Post-Impressionists, he started exhibiting with the New English Art Club in 1900, becoming a member in 1903. John’s first solo exhibition was held at the Carfax Gallery later that year. He was elected an Associate Royal Academician in 1921 and a Royal Academician in 1928. A member of the London Group (1940–61), he was awarded an OM in 1942. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the National Gallery in 1940.
