An abstract painter, Gear studied at Edinburgh College of Art 1932–7 and the Edinburgh University Fine Art Class 1936–7 under Sir William Gillies, John Maxwell and William McTaggart. The recipient of a travelling scholarship (1937–8), he worked in Paris under Fernand Léger. Gear served in the Second World War in the Middle East and Italy
