Wiliam Roberts was a founder of the Vorticist group (a type of British cubism representing the machine age) and a unique observer of twentieth century Britain. A gunner in the Royal Artillery in 1916, he was an Official War artist the following year. After the war, his style changed, as he began to present fuller, more robust bodies.
