Peter Howson converted to Christianity after a period of rehabilitation from drug and alcohol addiction in 2000. Since this period his works have addressed religious themes. He is also influenced by the streets, communities and workers in Glasgow where he grew up and later studied. He is well known for his penetrating insight into the human condition and uses his own personal experiences of abuse in his work, whether self-inflicted and substance-related or the traumatic events of his childhood.
