Saturday Night is an excellent example of William Roberts’ playful approach to picture composition. After glancing into a pub window near his home in Camden Town, North London, Roberts portrays pub-goers, in their peasant clothes, headscarves and in festive hats, celebrating in a world that is altogether less urban.
