John Bellany had a deeply religious upbringing and believed that art should show the realities of life. In the mid 1980s he had a liver transplant due to years of alcohol abuse and produced a number of works that depicted his recovery after the operation. Mexican influences changed his outlook on life and death after seeing celebrations of the Day of the Dead, an annual ritual that focuses on friends and family who have died.
