Many of William Gear’s paintings are abstract compositions inspired by landscapes and feature heavy black lines and bold swatches of colour. He was awarded a Festival of Britain Purchase Prize in 1951 and his work appeared at the 1954 Venice Biennale. Gear was also Curator of the Towner Art Gallery (1958-64) and Head of the Faculty of Fine Art, Birmingham College of Art (1964-1975).
