Andrew Lambirth, John Armstrong The Paintings, London 2009 (illustrated, no. 441, p. 200)
With Paul Nash, John Armstrong co-founded Unit One, whose manifesto declared the need for ‘a structural purpose’ in British art. He began to produce surrealist work but also made designs for theatre and film and was a highly skilled mural and classical painter. He was a keen observer of the human condition and his work comments on mankind’s frailty, particularly in the nuclear age.
